I spent years thinking blue midi dresses were the safe choice. The one you pick when you can’t decide, the beige of the evening dress world but in a nicer colour. I was completely wrong and I’d like to address that directly: blue, I’m sorry, I underestimated you for the best part of a decade, and you’ve been the better option this whole time.
Here’s what changed my mind. A proper blue midi, the kind cut on a bias so it moves when you walk rather than just hanging there, does something a black dress can’t. It reads as dressed up without screaming about it.

Styling wise, this is where people overthink it. You don’t need a jacket if the fabric has any weight to it, a proper crepe or a good satin holds its own in October. Heeled sandals if you’re going somewhere with a coat check, boots if you’re not precious about the hem getting near the floor. Gold jewellery over silver most of the time, blue and gold do something to each other that blue and silver just don’t. A bag small enough that you’re not carrying it like luggage, because nothing kills a good dress faster than clutching a tote all evening.
Occasion wise, this is your birthday dinner dress, your “we’re going for two drinks and it became five” dress, your work do dress when you want to look like you made an effort without looking like you’re trying to get promoted. It photographs well in low light, which matters more than anyone admits, and it survives a night out actually being worn, not just stood in.
