Brown had a reputation problem for years, mostly because everyone’s first encounter with it was a shapeless midi in a colour that read more “canteen furniture” than “chocolate martini”. I avoided it for a solid decade after wearing a brown wrap dress to a christening in 2013 and being told, by an actual relative, that I looked like I was “off to do a stocktake”. Harsh. Also, in fairness, accurate. But brown done properly is a completely different proposition, and once you find the right shade it becomes the colour you reach for more than black, because it does the same job of looking put together without the slight aggression black can bring to a Tuesday.
The trick is picking your temperature.
Warm chocolate and toffee tones sit beautifully against gold jewellery and tan or camel accessories, and they properly flatter most skin tones in a way that cooler browns, the greyish taupe-adjacent ones, can sometimes wash out. A good brown dress should feel rich rather than muddy. Hold it up to the light. If it looks like it’s apologising for existing, put it back.
Styling wise, brown is far more forgiving than people think.
Cream and brown together is quietly one of the best combinations going, soft and expensive looking without trying. Black boots and a leather jacket give it an edge for evening. Gold hoops instead of silver, always, it just sits better. For daytime, a brown dress with trainers and a denim jacket looks like you’ve made an effort while insisting you haven’t, which is the entire point of getting dressed most mornings.
Occasion wise, this is where brown quietly wins. It works for a dinner where black feels too severe and colour feels too try hard, it works for fresher autumn weddings when you don’t want to compete with the bridal party, and it works for the office in a slouchy knitted version that still says you have your life together, even if, like me, you absolutely do not. It photographs well, it travels well, it doesn’t crease into oblivion the second you sit down for three hours at a wedding breakfast, which I can confirm from bitter, brown corduroy experience.
Get the shade right and brown stops being the safe choice and starts being the interesting one.
