I said for years that blue maxi dresses were the colour equivalent of ordering a safe salad when everyone else is having pudding. Fine, sensible, forgettable. I was wrong, and I’ve had to sit with that.
The thing about blue is it does so much more work than people give it credit for. A proper blue maxi, the kind with a bit of weight to the fabric so it doesn’t cling in the wrong places or fly up on a windy platform, reads as considered rather than boring. It’s got the drama of a full length dress but none of the shouting that colour like red or a big clashing print brings to the room.
You can wear it to a wedding without worrying you’re upstaging the bridesmaids, and you can wear it to a Tuesday lunch that got unexpectedly fancy, and it holds up in both places, which is not nothing.
What makes a good one is mostly about how it moves. If it’s stiff enough to stand up on its own in the shop, walk away.
You want something with a bit of drape, so when you sit down at a table it doesn’t concertina up like an accordion and trap you there for the rest of the meal. Depth of blue matters too, a proper inky navy or a deep cornflower does more for most skin tones than a pale washed out version that can look a bit hospital gown under bad lighting.
Styling wise, this is where blue earns its keep. Gold jewellery against it looks rich without trying, a battered leather jacket thrown over the top takes it from garden party to actually going somewhere, and a flat sandal keeps it from feeling like you’re playing dress up. Heels obviously work if you’re committed, but I’ve learned the hard way that a maxi dress and heels on cobbles is a genuine hazard, not a stylistic choice.
Occasion wise, think anything with a guest list, a garden, or a glass of something cold in your hand. Christenings, summer weddings, the sort of dinner where you want to look like you made an effort without announcing it. It’s the dress that gets asked about twice and never once makes you regret the outfit the next morning, which, honestly, is rarer than it should be.
