I spent about three years convinced blue skater dresses were a trap. Too sweet, too “am dram production of Grease,” too much swish for a body that just wants to sit down at brunch without the skirt doing its own thing. I said as much to my sister at a wedding once and she just looked at me and said “you’re wearing one right now and you look great, shut up.” Rude. Also, annoyingly, correct.
What actually won me round is the cut, not the colour. A proper skater dress has a fitted bodice that does the work, then lets go at the waist so the skirt can move without you having to think about it.
Blue is just the bit that gets all the attention because it’s easy to wear and hard to get wrong, from a denim-toned mid blue that behaves like a neutral to a cobalt that acts like you tried. The good ones sit high enough on the waist that you’re not constantly tugging, and the skirt has enough weight to swing rather than flip up on the first bit of wind, which I learned the hard way outside a station in Leeds and would rather not relive.
Styling wise, this is not a dress that needs much help.
Trainers and a denim jacket for anything daytime, a proper heel and a blazer thrown over the shoulders rather than on if you’re heading somewhere that requires effort. Tights in autumn, bare legs the second it’s above about fourteen degrees, no negotiation. A belt if the waist’s a bit loose, gold jewellery if it’s a deeper blue, silver if it’s paler, and honestly a good bag does more for this dress than any amount of accessorising the top half.
Where it earns its keep is the in between occasions, the ones without a strict dress code but where you still want to look like you tried a bit. Baby showers, a work thing that’s not quite smart casual, a lunch that might turn into drinks, a wedding where you’re not close enough to the couple to need a fascinator. It photographs well without trying, moves well on a dance floor, and forgives a big lunch, which is not nothing. That’s the whole pitch really. Not clever, just reliably good, in the one colour that never looks like you’re trying too hard.
