I spent about four years thinking blue skirts were a cop out. Not black, not navy trousers pretending to be smart, just blue, sitting there being neither one thing nor the other. I owned one cornflower midi that I bought in 2019 for a wedding and wore exactly once, then hung at the back of the rail like it had done something wrong. It hadn’t. I had.
What changed my mind was realising blue does something no other colour on a skirt quite manages, it reads as considered without trying to prove it.
A good one has actual weight to the fabric, enough that it swings when you walk rather than clinging or floating about like a tea towel on a washing line. Cheap ones give themselves away in about four washes, they go thin at the waistband and the colour turns chalky. The proper ones, cotton with a bit of body, or a denim with real structure, or a silky one that’s heavy enough not to crease the second you sit down, those hold their shade and their shape for years. My colleague Priya wore a denim one to the office three days running once, not by accident, on purpose, and said nobody clocked it because it just looked like she owned her Tuesdays.
That’s the whole appeal really, it does the work of a statement piece while behaving itself.
Styling wise, I’ve stopped overthinking it. A white shirt half tucked, an old jumper, even a slightly wrong t shirt, blue skirts are forgiving of a mediocre top in a way black ones absolutely are not. Trainers make it look like you have somewhere to be. A heel and a bit of gold jewellery and suddenly you’re dressed for something with a seating plan. Denim on denim works far more often than people admit, I was wrong about that too, for years I thought it was a costume rather than an outfit.
Where it earns its place is the middle ground occasions, the ones that are smarter than a Tuesday but not black tie, a lunch that matters, a first date you’re pretending you’re not nervous about, an afternoon wedding where you refuse to wear the try hard dress again. It’s the skirt equivalent of having your answer ready before someone’s finished asking the question.
