I spent about four years convinced denim skirts were a costume for people who cycle to farmers markets on the weekend. Wrong. Properly wrong, the kind of wrong you have to sit with a bit. A blue denim skirt, done well, is one of the few things that looks like you tried without looking like you tried, and that’s a hard trick to pull off in any fabric, let alone one this stiff and unforgiving when it’s bad.
What makes one actually good is the weight and the wash. You want a mid blue that’s had some life in it, not the flat, dark, straight off the loom denim that stands away from your body like it’s got its own opinions.
A bit of movement in the fabric matters more than any detail on it. Length is personal but midi is doing the most interesting work right now, that in between spot that isn’t trying to be either a mini or a maxi and somehow reads as more deliberate for it.
Styling wise, the instinct is to keep everything else casual and that’s the mistake I made for years. A denim skirt with a plain t shirt is fine, it’s just a bit flat, a bit school run. It comes alive against something it shouldn’t technically go with, a sharp shirt, a proper knit, boots with a heel rather than trainers. Tuck something in, let the waistband actually show, that’s where the shape happens.
Layer a blazer over it and it stops being weekend wear entirely.
Occasion wise, this is where it earns its place properly. Daytime drinks, a lunch you’ve slightly overdressed for on purpose, a Sunday that might turn into something else by six o’clock. It works for the in between moments, the ones that aren’t a big event but deserve more than jeans, which is a category of occasion I don’t think gets talked about enough. It’s also quietly brilliant for travel, denim doesn’t crease the way you’d think and it looks the same at the end of a train journey as it did at the start, which is more than I can say for most of what’s in my case.
The bit I still get wrong sometimes is thinking texture on top means texture on bottom too. It doesn’t. Let the skirt be the sturdy one and keep everything else soft.
