I spent years thinking boat necks were a French film cliche, all stripes and effortlessness I definitely hadn’t earned, and avoided them out of some misplaced fear of looking like I was cosplaying a woman called Brigitte on a boat I didn’t own. Styling wise, it wants the rest of the outfit kept relatively quiet up top, because the neckline is already doing the talking. High waisted trousers, a good pair of jeans, a skirt with a bit of shape to it, that’s your lane. Sleeves matter more than people think, a three quarter length or something cropped just above the wrist elongates the whole thing rather than cutting you off mid forearm. Layer a blazer over it and suddenly you look like you’ve got a meeting to get to, even if the meeting is lunch. Add a scarf, and there’s your Brigitte moment, no boat required.
Occasion wise this is the top that quietly earns its place across the whole week. Office ready without trying, good under a coat in that horrible in between March weather, still looks considered at a dinner if you swap the jeans for something with a heel.
