I spent years avoiding beige for the very reason that it was safe. Safe meant boring. Safe meant I gave up and wanted to curl into a ball and become one with a filing cabinet. But beige, I was wrong. And I’ll properly say that, beige, I apologise to you. Because a good midi skirt in beige does what no other neutral can. It looks considered rather than cautious. And against your skin it does something flattering that no other colour really does – black least of all.
It falls nicely, seesms slimmer somehow and just…. feels like it wants to be worn.
The fabric is everything here. What you’re looking for is something that speaks for itself rather than the colour. Stiffer cottons or linen blends will hold their shape and give you a beautiful arch as you walk, while anything with a satin or ‘slip’ to it will hang completely differently and feel more suited to an evening look.
Flat, chalky colours that stick to your hips in all the wrong places after half an hour of dining belong in the trash. Ask my friend Priya who sat down for lunch and stood up with creases across the front of her skirt that didn’t disappear for hours. Always check what it’s made from before you even think about the length.
Contrast when it comes to styling, is your best friend. Beige wants a pop of something against it rather than beige on beige (don’t ask me how many times I learned that lesson, I look like a dried up linen curtain). Throw on a crisp white shirt, tuck it in and push your sleeves up and you’ll look like you put effort in with barely any at all. Throw a chunky navy or forest green knit over it when it gets colder and you’ve got yourself all year round. Then when it comes to nights out change your sandals for a heeled version and add some gold jewellery. It elevates the whole look without replacing a single piece.
Weddings at the start of autumn when everyone is wondering what to wear as you can’t bear another nude but black is too dark. Client lunches. Days where you want to wear pyjamas but leave the house decent. It’s your new best friend for the things that wearing jeans just won’t cut. It photographs better than any other colour in strange light. It will take you from office to dinner with one swap of shoes. It won’t scream at you from the back of your wardrobe that no-one cares about anymore. And really, that’s why I love it. It’s quiet. But only because it knows it’s doesn’t need to be loud.
