I spent about four years thinking beige trench coats were what your mum wore to the school gates. Sorry, beige. Genuinely sorry. It took a truly disastrous cream mac, bought in 2019 for a wedding I was already dreading, to make me understand that beige and cream are not the same colour and I had been blaming the wrong one for years.
A properly good beige trench does something almost no other coat can, it makes whatever’s underneath look more expensive than it is. Jeans and a plain top stop being jeans and a plain top the second you put a decent trench over them.
That’s the whole trick. You’re not dressing up, the coat is doing it for you. The colour matters more than people admit, you want something with a bit of warmth to it, a biscuit or a sandy tone rather than anything that tips towards grey, because that’s what stops it looking like a uniform and starts looking like an actual choice you made.
Fit is where most of them go wrong.
Too big and you’re wearing a duvet with a belt. Too fitted and you lose the whole point, which is that slight architectural swagger, the collar that stands up properly, the belt that’s meant to be tied loosely and knotted, not buckled like you’re reporting for jury duty. My colleague Priya watched me tie mine in the office loo once and said “you look like you’re about to solve a crime,” which I’ve decided to take as the highest compliment a coat has ever received.
Styling wise, it wants contrast. Trainers under it if you’re doing errands, a proper heel if you’re doing dinner, tailored trousers if you want to look like you have your life together on a Tuesday, which, statistically, you might not. It survives everything London weather throws at it, I’ve had mine soaked through on a platform at Clapham Junction and it dried out looking better than I did.
Weddings, work, that specific kind of Sunday where you’re meeting someone for coffee but pretending it’s not a big deal, it covers all of it. One good beige trench and you’ve basically solved fifteen separate outfit problems in advance.
