I spent about three years thinking blue jackets meant navy blazer, full stop, end of conversation, and then a friend turned up to brunch in a cobalt biker and I actually said out loud “wait, you’re allowed to do that.” I was wrong for three years. Formally and completely wrong.
Because blue is doing something denim can’t and black never will. It’s got all the same don’t overthink it ease as a neutral, but it actually flatters, warms up paler skin, calms down anything too tanned or too flushed from the walk to the station. A good blue jacket reads as considered without you having to try, which is the whole point of the colour existing in outerwear at all.
What makes one worth having isn’t the shade so much as the shape doing the talking.
A cropped one wants a high waist under it, jeans or a skirt, so the jacket gets to be the loud bit. A longer, more tailored blue coat wants to be worn open over something plain, a white shirt, a black jumper, because the coat is already the outfit and everything else is just scaffolding.
The mistake I made for years was matching the jacket to something else blue and ending up looking like I was in a school photo. Don’t do that. Let it sit against black, grey, cream, camel, all the colours that have nothing to say for themselves until this turns up.
Denim adjacent blues, the darker inky ones, do brilliant double duty, smart enough for an office that’s stopped pretending it has a dress code, casual enough for a Saturday that involves a market and possibly a hangover. The brighter, truer blues are for occasions where you want to be noticed without doing anything else to earn it, a lunch, a gallery thing, standing at the back of a wedding looking like you tried less than you did.
Best worn with confidence and absolutely nothing else matching. That’s the whole trick. I learned it late, but I learned it.
