Culottes work best when they straddle that line between casual and put together; comfortable enough to grab without thinking but still get the job done when you need to dress to impress.
They earn their place when they can balance the contradiction that makes them worth wearing in the first place; the comfort of a skirt with the functionality of trousers, and that only happens when the proportions are spot on. They should sit neatly at your natural waist and break anywhere between mid calf and just above the ankle, with enough volume to swing as you walk but not so much that they look costume-y. Shorter and you’re into playsuit territory, longer and you lose the leg.
Tailoring is important too; the weight of the fabric matters more than you might think. Something heavy, like a crepe or a cotton with structure will hold it’s shape and swing nicely, where something too light will cling and give away your leg line when you’re trying to hide it.
THE waistband is where most culottes fall apart.
Too many brands just slap on an elastic waistband without thinking about the rest of the garment. You want something flat and tailored with proper closures to read as trousers before you even think skirt. If it’s gathered all the way around it’ll only bunch and ruin the tailored effect you worked so hard for.
Having said that, someuccessful styles use elastic at the back only. As long as the front is flat you can get away with it.
If there are pleats at the waist they should be pressed, not soft and billowy. You want the volume higher up, not at your hips.
As far as styling goes, it’s mostly down to playing with proportion in the rest of your outfit. Give your eye somewhere to look with a cropped or fitted top tucked in. Knits work really well here, something delicate instead of something chunky. You want the top half of your outfit to stay slim to contrast with everything moving on your bottom half. And finish with the right footwear; a pointy flat or a low heel will elongate your leg where sneakers or flats will chop you off at the ankle, especially if your culottes break more on the long side.
It’s all about the occasions where you can wear them too. They’re ideal for when trousers seem too formal but a dress feels like overkill; smart-ish day events, traveling, spring/summer offices and evenings where you want the ease of trousers without sacrificing all hope of feminine movement. Throw a blazer on and they can handle themselves alongside stronger outfits that would usually require tailoring, throw a simple tee on and slide your sandals backless and they’ll carry you effortlessly through whole weekends.
