I held the wrong opinion about blue blazers for years. I thought navy was the safe, slightly boring cousin of black, the one you wore when you couldn’t be bothered to make a decision. I was wrong, and I’m saying that to the colour directly: sorry, navy, you were never boring, I just kept buying the wrong cut.
What makes a blue blazer worth having is the blue itself doing some actual work. Navy reads as proper tailoring, the sort of thing that survives a full day at a desk and then a drink after without looking like it’s given up. Cobalt or a brighter mid blue does the opposite job, it walks into a room and says something, and honestly that’s the one my colleague Priya borrowed off the back of my chair last winter and never gave back.
That’s the real test of a good one, whether someone else tries to steal it off you before you’ve even taken it off.
The shoulder and the length matter more than people admit.
A blazer that’s too long turns into a coat you didn’t ask for, and one that’s too boxy just sits there looking like a school uniform. You want something with a bit of shape, that skims rather than swamps, so it works over a plain white shirt for the office and just as well over nothing much at all for the evening.
Styling wise, don’t overthink it. Jeans and a blazer is the combination that’s never once let me down, smart enough for a lunch you’re slightly nervous about, relaxed enough that nobody thinks you tried too hard. Layer it over a slip dress for something with a proper dinner in mind, or throw it over tailored trousers when you need to look like you have your life together, even if you absolutely do not.
Occasion wise, this is the piece that gets you through the ambiguous invitations, the ones that just say “smart casual” and give you nothing else to go on. Weddings where you’re not sure how dressed up is too dressed up, work events that spill into drinks, the school run followed immediately by a meeting you forgot about. One blazer, endless excuses to wear it.
