I spent about three years thinking blue blouses were a bit of a cop out. Safe, sensible, the sort of thing you buy for a job interview and then never again. I was wrong, and I’m addressing that head on because I owe blue blouses an apology after ignoring an entire section of my own wardrobe for the best part of a decade.
What changed my mind is realising there isn’t one blue, there are about forty, and each one does something completely different. A cornflower blouse with a bit of movement in the fabric reads as soft and a little romantic. A sharp cobalt in something structured like poplin looks like you’ve made an actual decision that morning rather than grabbed the nearest thing off the rail.
Navy with a hint of sheen does the job a black blouse usually does but with more warmth near the face, which matters more than people admit. The good ones have a proper collar or a cuff that closes properly, nothing flimsy, and a blue that holds up under office lighting without going grey or lifeless.
Styling wise, I’ve stopped treating blue as a neutral to hide behind and started treating it as the main event.
Tuck it into trousers with a strong waistband and let it do the talking, minimal jewellery, nothing fighting it. Under a blazer in a completely different colour, camel or black, it stops feeling like corporate wear and starts feeling like an actual outfit. My colleague Priya once looked at mine over a meeting and said “that’s not an interview blouse, that’s a leaving drinks blouse,” which is genuinely the best compliment a blue blouse has ever received in this office.
Occasion wise they’re doing more work than people give them credit for. Under a suit for something that actually matters. Loose over jeans for a lunch you can’t be bothered to overdress for. Tucked and buttoned to the top for anything with a seating plan. The trick is stopping thinking of blue as the safe choice and starting to treat it as the one with the most range, because once you’ve got a couple of good ones you’ll notice you reach for them more than the prints, more than the whites, more than anything else in that section of the rail.
