I have a complicated relationship with blue trench coats that I’ve mostly resolved now, but it took a few wrong turns to get there. The first one I bought was too pale, more powder puff than proper coat, and it looked lovely on a hanger and slightly ridiculous the second it met actual British weather. What I know now is that the blue has to earn its keep. You want something with enough depth to it, a navy that reads almost black in low light, or a denim toned blue with a bit of grit to it, rather than anything that veers into baby blanket territory. That depth is what makes it read as a proper coat and not a costume piece.
The shape matters just as much as the colour.
A good trench has structure through the shoulder and a belt that actually does something rather than sitting there decoratively, because half the appeal of this coat is the moment you cinch it and your whole silhouette changes.
Look for a collar with some stiffness in it, storm flaps that aren’t purely for show, and a length that hits somewhere mid calf to knee. Too short and it loses the drama, too long and you’re wading through it on the escalator.
Styling wise, this is a coat that likes contrast. Throw it over something soft and slightly undone, a knit and jeans, a plain white shirt hanging loose, so the coat gets to do the structured talking while everything underneath relaxes. It also earns its place over a proper dress for the days when you need to look pulled together without actually trying, belt done up, done. I’d steer clear of pairing it with anything else too fussy or patterned up top, the blue already has presence and doesn’t need competition.
Occasion wise, this is the coat for the in between days, the ones that start with a work meeting and end somewhere less formal, or the school run that somehow needs to look like it wasn’t a scramble. It photographs well on a grey morning, which is either useful or depressing depending on how you look at it, but either way, a blue trench earns its place far more often than a black one gets credit for.
