A good combat boot should feel like it weighs a lot. I mean SOLID sole unit heavy, leather thick enough to not wrinkle around your ankle halfway through the week heavy. That stiffness is what you’re going for. This is not shoes that look delicate or sorry for themselves. The laces should go up high enough that they can actually serve a purpose. Get a REAL row of eyelets as oppose to the suggestion of one and make sure the toe has a slight squaring as oppose to that dreaded skinny point that seemed to rob the heel boot of its bad ass. Notice the tread on the sole as well. A flat rubber means this boot wants to be modeled down a runway, not run across them.
Fit is key with these babies.
Too big and you’ll lose the ankle support that is selling you on the whole idea, too small and they won’t stretch to your feet how good leather should. Wait for them to break in. The good ones will need a week or two of wear before they start to feel less like they’re encasing your feet in armour and more like an extension of your body. Style wise, you can almost only mess them up by dressing too hard. Boots like these are actually one of the more versatile statement pieces you can own. Tuck a pair under a skirt (HIGH or midi, doesn’t matter) and they cut the cute factor down immediately. Not leaving you dreaded festival for costume look. Throw on a blazer or nice trouser and you’ve instantly added edge to a look that may be too polished for your day.
Jeans and you pretty much can’t go wrong. Throw on any ol’ tee and you’re good for couple seasons there. Activity wise they’ll gladly ride that fine line. Take your kids to school, run errands and they’re still adorable enough for THAT gallery opening you’ve been wanting to check out. Just make sure you wear them home. They’re perfect for festival. They can take you to work on those comfort over everything kind of days. They won’t match your favorite evening dress. But throw on a pair of nude tights and a simple slip dress and they won’t feel out of place at the fanciest dinner date that doesn’t involve seating. The beauty of a combat boot is they can be SO many things. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. That’s why they earn their spot on your shoe shelf.
