I spent about four years thinking beige was the colour equivalent of a shrug. A non decision. The thing you wore when you couldn’t be bothered to have an opinion about getting dressed. I owned one beige dress, bought in a rush before a christening in 2019, and it did nothing for me and I did nothing for it and we both knew it. So I get the scepticism. But a good beige maxi dress is not a shrug, it’s a decision, and it took me embarrassingly long to work that out.
The ones worth having earn it through fabric and cut, not colour alone, because beige with no shape or drape just reads as unfinished. You want something with actual weight to it, a fabric that moves when you walk rather than a dress that stands there looking like a paper bag caught in a hedge.
The best ones have a bit of structure somewhere, a tie, a seam, a neckline that’s doing something, because flat beige on flat beige on a flat cut is how you end up looking like the walls of a rental flat.
Styling one is where the fun actually starts. Gold jewellery works harder here than it does with almost any other colour, it warms the whole thing up instead of sitting on top of it. Tan or brown leather, a decent sandal, anything metallic on the feet in summer. A blazer thrown over it takes it from “wedding guest” to “person having lunch who also has opinions about wine.” Don’t be scared of contrast either, a bright bag or a red lip against beige does more than the same trick ever does against black, because there’s nothing else competing for attention.
Occasion wise, this is your late spring wedding dress, your godmother’s sixtieth, your “smart but I’ve had two coffees and can’t do structure” work event. It photographs well against most backdrops, which sounds shallow until you’re stood in front of a stone church in July and you understand exactly why that matters. It’s not a dress for nightclubs or funerals, it’s a dress for the middle ground, the garden party, the long lunch, the day you want to look considered without looking like you tried too hard to prove it.
