Beige pleated skirts are one of those pieces that either look expensive or look like you got lost on the way to a school reunion, and the difference is almost never the colour itself, it is the fall of the pleat. A good one holds its shape when you walk, catches a bit of light at the crease, and skims rather than clings. A bad one goes limp by lunchtime and starts looking like a paper fan someone sat on. On its own, top to bottom in the same shade, it can go a bit invisible, a bit “off to a garden party I did not choose the venue for”. The fix is contrast, not colour. Put it with a chunky dark knit, a leather jacket, a crisp white shirt with the collar left open, something with enough texture or structure that the skirt has something to push against. Tucking in matters more than usual here too, since a loose top over a pleated skirt just cancels out the shape you paid for.
Footwear does a lot of the deciding on occasion. Knee boots and thick tights take it straight into fully dressed office territory, or into a smart lunch that pretends it is casual. A pair of loafers and bare ankles turns the same skirt into a weekend errand outfit that still looks like effort was involved. Heeled sandals and a slip of gold jewellery push it towards evening, particularly if the top half goes slightly sheer or slightly sharp. It is a genuinely good one for anything with a dress code that says “smart casual” and means it, weddings you are not in, work drinks, a lunch where you want to look like you tried without looking like you are trying.
