I said for years that black cardigans were what my nan wore to church, and I want that on record because I was completely wrong and I’ve eaten those words in front of three different shop assistants now. A black cardigan is not a concession to cold weather or a sad admission that the party’s over. Done properly it’s one of the hardest working things you’ll own, and the ones worth having earn that through the details nobody photographs, a good drape through the body, buttons that actually sit flush instead of gaping at the third one down, ribbing at the cuff that keeps its shape after a wash rather than going slack and sad by October.
What I look for now is weight. Too flimsy and it reads as an afterthought, something thrown on because the office is cold. Too heavy and you’re wearing a small blanket with sleeves.
The good ones sit somewhere in between, substantial enough to wear with nothing underneath on a warm evening, light enough to layer under a coat without looking like you’ve bulked yourself out for a fight.
Styling wise, this is where they earn their keep. Over a slip dress with boots, it stops the whole outfit looking like you forgot a jacket. Buttoned up alone with trousers and loafers, it does the job of a blazer without the stiffness, which is the combination I now wear to nearly every meeting that isn’t in a boardroom. Open over a plain white shirt with the sleeves pushed up, it looks like you tried without trying, which is the entire point of this category. My colleague Priya once told me my cardigan made an outfit look expensive, and it was from a sale rack, which felt like the best possible outcome.
They suit the in between moments best, the dinner that starts too early for a coat and ends too late for none, the train journey home, the wedding guest outfit where you need something to throw over your shoulders in the church that doesn’t compete with whatever’s underneath. It’s not a showpiece. It’s the thing that makes everything else look considered, and after years of underestimating it, I’m fully converted.
