I own more black tank tops than I could reasonably justify to anyone who asked, and the honest truth is most of them earned their place by accident, one good wash cycle and a lucky neckline at a time. A proper black tank top is such a specific thing to get right. Too thin and it goes see through under office lighting, which I learned the hard way standing under a strip light in a meeting room in 2019 and spending the rest of the day with my cardigan zipped to the chin. Too thick and it stops being a layering piece and starts being a statement you didn’t mean to make. The good ones sit somewhere in the middle, with a bit of weight to the fabric so it holds its shape across the chest and doesn’t ride up the second you reach for something on a top shelf, and a neckline that’s been thought about rather than an afterthought.
Strap width matters more than people give it credit for.
A slightly wider strap sits better under a blazer or a shirt left open, while the narrower spaghetti versions are for when the tank is doing the talking on its own, under a slip skirt or with proper tailored trousers and gold jewellery. My colleague once looked at me in a particularly good one under a suit and said, “that’s doing more work than the jacket,” which is exactly the compliment you want.
Where they really shine is the in between moments.
Layered under a blouse that’s cut for movement rather than sitting stiff, or on their own with a long skirt and boots for the sort of dinner where you want to look like you tried without looking like you tried. They’re brilliant for travel too, the sort of thing you can wear on a flight and then dress up at the other end with different trousers and no other decisions required. What I’ve stopped doing is treating the black tank as an invisible base layer, because a good one deserves to be seen at the collarbone, not hidden away like it’s something to apologise for.
