I spent about six years thinking brown was the colour you wore when black felt like too much effort and camel felt like too much money. Wrong on both counts, and I only worked that out after a leather jacket in a colour the shop called “chocolate” turned out, in actual daylight, to be the exact shade of a school shoe. Not the vibe.
A proper brown jacket earns its place because it does something black can’t, it warms up whatever’s underneath instead of flattening it. Put it against cream, stone, a washed out denim, even a slightly clashing burgundy, and it reads considered rather than accidental. The trick is the tone.
Chestnut and cognac sit close to gold and flatter almost everyone, while a flatter, greyer brown can go a bit municipal if the fabric isn’t doing enough work. So the finish matters more than the colour itself, a good suede or a leather with proper grain will save a so so shade, and a cheap flat cotton will make even the nicest cognac look like a school uniform.
Styling wise, this is the jacket that makes an outfit look like you tried without looking like you tried.
Thrown over a plain white tee and jeans it does the heavy lifting on its own. Over a slip dress it turns something a bit going out into something you could wear at 3pm without feeling overdressed. With black, which I resisted for ages on the basis that brown and black together sounded like a rule from 1997, it actually looks properly modern, moody rather than mismatched. Gold jewellery, not silver, and boots over trainers if you want it to look intentional rather than like you grabbed the nearest coat.
Occasion wise it’s got range most black jackets don’t. A leather one takes you from a Tuesday commute to a Friday dinner without a costume change. A shearling or borg lined version is the one you reach for on the actual cold days, not the ones where you’re just performing being cold for Instagram. And a soft suede blazer style brown jacket will get you through anything from a work thing to a lunch where you want to look like you have your life together, even slightly, even briefly.
