On a tiered dress gold behaves differently depending on what is beneath it. Metallic thread woven into chiffon or georgette reflects light in a way that flat fabric will never accomplish. That’s why the tiering is as important to pay attention to as the colour itself. Each layer flows independently of the one above and below it so the dress sparkles and fades with movement rather than sitting like one shiny sheet. Look for tiers that are cut with enough fullness to swing without adding so many that the hem gets stiff and triangular. Ideally it will have a lining beneath the metallic layer too so it doesn’t cling to your skin or become translucent under studio lighting or flash photography.
The fit through the bodice is where I see most of these make or break it for me. Gold will draw the eye in, so if the bodice gapes or the waist doesn’t sit right it will stick out like a sore thumb more than a heavily embellished dress in a solid colour might.
Look for dresses with a defined waist seam or a wrap front that can be tightened or loosen rather than relying on the flounces alone to give you shape.
Ideally the better versions will have some sort of structure at the top that allow the movement and flirtation to happen at the bottom half of the dress, creating a considered silhouette rather than just flashes of light.
Styling one of these little beauties is largely about reigning yourself in elsewhere. Golden tiering and sparkles are already doing the heavy lifting of being a statement piece so add metallic shoes or chunky jewellery on top and you risk overdoing the look. Keep shoes simple (a strappy sandal in nude, black or a tone on tone gold will let your dress shine) and your jewellery minimal. Hair can be left down or tied up low and out of your face. It’s all about keeping the focus on the dress. For something that needs to transition from day to night a tailored blazer works wonders over the top. It’ll take your dress from suitable for an early drinks reception to party-ready without you needing to change.
The places I reach for gold tiering are usually attached to some sort of ceremony. Race days, festive parties or weddings as a guest spring to mind. They’re also great for milestone birthdays or really any occasion that calls for ‘something sparkly’ but you don’t want to go full sequinned mini dress. They photograph well under evening light. And maintain their shape way better than anything with structured bodices or boning when you’re out dancing until the early hours. Like most dressy silhouettes they mostly do sell themselves when worn with confidence and little else.
