I spent about a decade thinking beige was what you wore when you’d given up. My nan had a beige cardigan she called “the good one” and wore it to funerals, doctor’s appointments and one memorable Christmas lunch, and I decided the colour and defeat were basically the same thing. I was wrong, and I’m saying that properly, not as a cute little aside. Beige, done right, isn’t giving up, it’s just refusing to shout.
What makes a beige jumper worth owning is almost entirely about the wool, because the colour has nowhere to hide a cheap knit. Go too thin and it looks like something you’d find folded in a charity shop with a slight damp smell.
You want a chunkier gauge or something with proper weight to it, a colour that reads more like oatmeal or clotted cream than “beige beige,” because true flat beige can do unkind things under office lighting. My colleague Priya once looked at mine across a desk and said “that’s not beige, that’s biscuit,” and honestly biscuit is the correct aim.
Styling one is where the fun starts, because beige refuses to compete with anything.
Chuck it over a white shirt with the collar out and it looks quietly expensive. Tuck it into dark denim or trousers and it does the thing black can’t, which is look soft rather than severe. It’s brilliant with gold jewellery, terrible with anything else beige unless you enjoy vanishing entirely, I did that once at a wedding and got mistaken for staff.
Occasion wise, this is your Sunday lunch with the in laws jumper, your train journey jumper, your “I have a work call and then immediately have to look like a person” jumper. It sits under a coat beautifully, which black wool jumpers weirdly don’t always manage without looking like you’re in mourning. It photographs well against most skin tones, which is more than I can say for the mustard one I bought in 2019 and wore twice.
So no, it’s not the boring option. It’s the one that works when you can’t be bothered to think, which, be honest, is most days.
