I spent years thinking beige was the colour equivalent of leaving a party early. Fine, forgettable, the thing you wear when you can’t decide. I was wrong about that, and a beige mini skirt is the reason I had to admit it.

A black fine knit and boots and it’s dinner, drinks, the kind of evening where you don’t want to think about your outfit again after seven o’clock. Even a clashing colour, a rust jumper, a bottle green blazer, sits nicely against it because beige just makes room.
Where it properly earns its place is anywhere you’re dressing to be taken seriously without looking like you tried too hard, meetings, lunches you can’t be late for, the wedding guest situation where you refuse to wear florals again after the incident with the marquee and the wind. It’s not a skirt that shouts. It’s the one that gets compliments three weeks later when someone’s trying to remember what you had on.
