I spent years thinking beige was the colour equivalent of saying nothing at a dinner party. Safe, invisible, the sort of shade you pick when you can’t be bothered to have an opinion. I was wrong, and I’m addressing that directly here because a beige blazer is actually the hardest working thing in my whole coat cupboard, and I ignored it for a decade in favour of navy like an idiot.
What makes a good one comes down to structure and hand. You want enough shoulder to give it a bit of intent, not so much that you look like you’re borrowing your dad’s suit for a wedding reading. The fabric matters more than people admit, a blazer that creases the second you sit down on a train is not a blazer, it’s a decorative bin bag.
Something with a bit of weight to it, wool or a decent blend, will fall properly and survive being screwed into a bag when the tube gets unbearable.
Styling wise, this is where beige earns its keep. It sits under a coat without adding bulk, so it’s brilliant for that in between temperature where one layer is too little and a big coat is too much. Wear it over a plain white t-shirt and jeans and it looks like you tried without trying. Wear it over a slip dress with boots and it stops looking corporate immediately.
Chuck it over a hoodie for the school run and somehow it still reads as pulled together rather than thrown on, which feels like cheating.
It’s also the one blazer colour that doesn’t fight with anything else you own. Black trousers, cream knits, khaki, even a loud print underneath, beige just lets everything else do the talking instead of announcing itself first. That’s the actual argument for it, not that it’s flattering in some vague sense, but that it stops your outfit having an argument with itself in the mirror at eight in the morning.
Occasion wise it covers more ground than almost anything else on the rail. Office days, a lunch you can’t be bothered to overdress for, travel days when you want one layer that looks intentional at both the airport and the other end. It’s not flashy. It’s just quietly right, which, it turns out, is worth more than I gave it credit for.
