I spent one summer at least convinced that biker shorts were strictly for gym wear and nothing else. This is objectively a stupid opinion to have had for as long as I did considering how many times a week I now reach for them under everything. The good ones fit with actual compression without digging into the top of your thighs, they’re cropped to sit half way down your thigh rather than riding up to knicker level whenever you sit down and they have a matte finish because nylon cycling short fabric is gym changing rooms not going out to dinner vibe.
The reason they’re worth investing in as a layering staple rather than just a filling for your gym drawer is thanks to the waistband. The wider and flatter it is the less chance it has of rolling down or digging in so you can wear them under a slip dress or a big shirt or an oversized jumper and not have a ridge separating the clothing from your skin. Which is kind of the point. Under a knee-scraping dress they double asinsurance against any sudden sitting down scenarios- no leg wiggle required, no pulling down your dress in public places. Pair them with an oversized blazer and nothing else on your legs and they look sleek, not like you forgot your trousers.
Style wise I’ve worn mine with chunky boots and a long cardigan for chaotically chic (but actually put together) look, or under a slip skirt sliced down one side. This is the combo that actually garnered enough attention from my sister to stop her mid sentence and inquire where I’d got them. They’re also great for throwing on with an oversized football style shirt, tucked in but not tight, socks pulled up, trainers on.
Basically if you’re going to be standing about outdoors. Festivals, match day, a long stroll somewhere with no seating plan.
They really come into their own with transitional dressing though, that window between it being too cold for bare legs but too warm for tights. Throw a pair on under a skirt or dress that hits just above the knee with bare ankles and boots and you’ve got yourself coverage with out the seam going up the top of your boot that always looks slightly VPL/SNL. They’re also perfection for travel- comfy enough to sit on for hours, but discreet enough that no one will realise your wearing loungewear as your actual outfit.
