I spent years thinking square necks were a “special occasion” cut, something you wheeled out for one wedding and put away again. Wrong, completely wrong, and I’ll say that plainly because it took an actual friend, Priya, trying one on in my kitchen before a work thing, to prove it. She stood there and said “this looks like I’ve made an effort without trying,” which is, genuinely, the entire pitch for a black square neck dress.
What makes the square neck work so hard is the line it draws. It sits straight across the collarbone instead of dipping or scooping, so it does something a round or V neck can’t, it gives you architecture. The square neck stops it looking like an afterthought. A good one holds its shape without gaping when you sit down, which sounds like a small thing until you’re at a dinner leaning forward to grab the bread and praying.
Fabric weight is where I’ve been caught out before. I bought a jersey square neck dress once thinking it would behave like the structured ones I owned, and by hour three at a christening it had gone soft at the neckline and started sliding sideways. Structured cotton or a proper ponte holds the shape all day. Slinkier fabrics can be lovely but they want a slip underneath and a bit less movement.
Styling it is genuinely the easy part, which is rare for black dresses. Gold jewellery reads as warm against that straight neckline, chunky earrings especially, because the shape gives them somewhere to sit. A blazer over the top takes it into the office or a meeting that matters. Bare shoulders and a proper heel takes the exact same dress into evening territory. Flat boots and a coat left open takes it into a Tuesday.
Occasion wise this is the dress for anything where you want to look like you thought about it without looking like you spent the morning deciding. Work drinks, a christening, a first date, a funeral if it’s cut right and you keep the jewellery quiet. One dress, several entirely different nights.
