The Best Blue Wrap Skirts For Layering This Season

I spent an entire winter convinced wrap skirts were a warm weather thing only, strictly for holidays and pub gardens, and I was wrong in a way that’s slightly embarrassing to admit now. Blue ones, especially, are some of the best layering pieces I own, and I ignored them for years because I’d only ever tried them in linen, which does exactly nothing once October arrives.

What makes a good one isn’t complicated. It’s the wrap itself, that proper overlap and the tie that actually holds, not some flimsy button pretending to do the job. A denim or twill blue wrap skirt has enough body to sit well over tights and under a jumper without going shapeless, and the good ones move with you rather than flapping open every time you sit down on a train, which is a specific fear I now check for before buying anything.

For styling, this is where the layering bit gets fun.

A fine knit tucked in, then a longer coat over the top, and the wrap detail peeking out at the hem does more visual work than most separates manage. Roll neck underneath if it’s properly cold. A boxier jacket over the top if you want the silhouette to do something less predictable than jumper and skirt.

My colleague Priya saw mine over black tights with an oversized shirt hanging out beneath a coat and said it looked like I’d got dressed by three different people who all had good taste, which I’m choosing to take as a compliment.

Boots are the obvious pairing, ankle or knee height depending on how much leg you want showing, but I’ve had good results with a chunky loafer too, especially for daytime. Occasion wise, this sits comfortably between smart and easy, so it works for an office that isn’t strict, for lunch that might turn into wine, for a wedding guest look if the fabric has some structure to it. It’s not a going out skirt in the loud sense, it’s the one you reach for when you want to look like you tried without anyone clocking the effort.
