I spent about three years thinking brown was the colour you wore when you’d given up. A crew feels properly no fuss and layers under a coat without any fuss at the collar, while a roll neck brings a bit more polish for the days you can’t be bothered to think about what’s underneath, because there’s nothing underneath, it’s just doing all the work.
For styling, brown genuinely earns its keep against colours people are nervous of on their own. Put it with cream and it looks expensive. Put it with a deep green or a burgundy and it looks like you meant to do that.
Denim, obviously, always, but the darker the wash the better the brown looks against it, there’s something about a mid blue that flattens it slightly. My colleague Priya once told me my rust brown jumper looked like it belonged to a Victorian gamekeeper, and honestly, I took it as a compliment, because that slightly rustic, slightly countryside energy is exactly what a good brown jumper should have, even in the middle of a city.
Occasion wise, this is the jumper for the days that don’t have a name. It sits under a trench for the commute and works loose over trousers for a Sunday that involves nothing more demanding than a long walk and a decent lunch. That’s the whole point of it. It’s not trying to be the outfit. It’s the thing that makes the outfit feel finished.
