A red dress works when the red does the talking and the cut gets out of the way. That means a true, saturated shade rather than something that reads orange in daylight or pink under artificial light, and a silhouette with enough structure to hold its own against the colour. Shoes are where personal taste has the most room to move, from a neutral heel that lets the dress lead, to black patent for something sharper, to gold or nude for occasions that call for more polish.
Occasion wise, this is a category that earns its place at anything with a degree of formality attached, from a smart dinner to a proper party, through to the kind of daytime event where a slightly bolder colour feels appropriate rather than showy. It photographs well, holds its shape through a long evening, and does not need much help from accessories to look deliberate. The dresses worth keeping are the ones that still look considered at the end of the night, not just at the start of it.
