A tunic for a night out has to do more work than a tunic for anything else. It needs enough structure to read as a proper going out top rather than something borrowed from daywear, which means fabric matters more than cut. Sleeve is often the detail that separates a good one from a forgettable one, a fitted long sleeve or a considered short sleeve with some shape to it does more for the occasion than a loose kimono cut, which tends to swamp the going out styling entirely.
Styling wise, this is not a piece that wants to be worn loose over trousers and left alone. Tuck it, half tuck it, or belt it at the waist so the shape has some definition, then let tailored trousers, a slim skirt or a good pair of dark denim do the rest.
Heeled boots or a strappy sandal push it firmly into evening territory, while jewellery and a strong lip do more than any additional layer could. A blazer thrown over the top works for the walk in, but the tunic should be confident enough to stand alone once it’s off.
Occasion wise, this is a category built for the nights that sit between formal and casual, dinner with people you want to impress slightly, drinks that might turn into dancing, a birthday that doesn’t have a strict dress code but clearly isn’t jeans and trainers territory. It flatters without demanding commitment to a fitted dress, and the right fabric choice means it photographs well under low lighting, which, if we’re honest, is half the point of a night out top in the first place.
