I spent three years thinking pleats meant church. My nan had a navy pleated skirt she wore to every single family event between 1998 and her actual funeral, and I decided, aged about eleven, that pleats were a punishment you accepted at fifteen and never questioned again. I was wrong, and blue pleated dresses are the specific reason I’ve had to admit it.
The trick with a pleated dress is that the pleats have to be doing something, not just sitting there like they were an afterthought stitched in at the last minute. A proper set holds a crease you can feel with your thumb, moves like water when you walk, and actually swings back into shape after you’ve sat through a two hour dinner folded into a chair. The cheap version goes limp by lunchtime and looks like a bin bag that’s given up.
Blue is doing a lot of the heavy lifting here too, because it’s the one colour in this shape that reads dressed up without trying, cornflower for daytime, ink or cobalt for anything after 6pm, and none of it needs the fuss that black pleats seem to demand.
Styling wise, resist the urge to over accessorise something that already has movement built in. A flat sandal and a bit of gold does more than a heel ever will, because the pleats are already providing the drama.

Add a denim jacket if it’s daytime and you want it to feel less like an occasion and more like a Tuesday. Where it properly earns its keep is anything with a bit of ceremony attached, a christening, a September wedding, a birthday dinner somewhere with tablecloths. It photographs well in motion, which matters more than anyone admits, and it hides a multitude of sins around the stomach because the fabric’s already busy doing its own thing. I was wrong about pleats for the better part of two decades. Consider this the correction.
