I bought a bomber in 2016 that had so much padding it made the noise of a duvet being folded every time I moved. Sounded like I was smuggling a sleeping bag under my arm. That’s the wrong bomber, and I wore it for two winters out of pure stubbornness before admitting defeat.
The right one doesn’t announce itself like that. It sits close through the body, has a collar that actually holds its shape rather than flopping by lunchtime, and ribbing at the cuff and hem with enough grip to hold the shape without leaving a dent in your wrists. Weight matters more than people think.
Too light and it reads as a cheap layer for the school run. Too heavy and you’re back to the duvet noise.
The good ones land somewhere in the middle, enough structure to look deliberate, enough give to actually move in.
What I love about a proper bomber is that it doesn’t try to be smart or casual, it just refuses to pick a side, which is exactly why it earns its place. Thrown over a slip dress it undoes any hint of “trying too hard” for a dinner you weren’t sure how to dress for. Buttoned over a shirt with tailored trousers it does a passable impression of a blazer for the days you can’t face an actual blazer. With jeans and boots it’s just correct, no notes, the kind of outfit you put together half asleep and somehow get complimented on.
My colleague Priya once told me mine looked “like you tried without trying,” which I’ve decided to take as the highest compliment this jacket type can receive, because that’s the entire job. It suits the in between occasions best, the ones with no dress code attached: picking someone up from the station, a Tuesday that turned into drinks, the walk to a wedding reception when the ceremony ran warm and you had to carry your coat.
Colour is where I’d actually push you somewhere other than black, which everyone defaults to and which I did for years before admitting a deep green or a rich burgundy earns its keep far more, they go with almost as much and look like you thought about it, rather than grabbed the nearest thing by the door.
