I bought my first boucle jacket because I thought it would make me look like I had a chic little life in Paris. Instead I looked like I was about to open a fete in a village I’d never visited, holding a pair of secateurs. Bad cut, bad proportions, boxy in exactly the wrong places. I wore it twice and then it lived at the back of my wardrobe for two years, judging me quietly every time I opened the door.
The thing is, a proper boucle jacket has nothing to do with that first mistake. It’s about texture doing the work that pattern usually does.
That slightly rough, looped, nubbly surface catches light in a way flat fabric never will, so even the plainest cropped shape looks like it’s got more going on than it actually does. A good one has a bit of structure through the shoulder without feeling stiff, and it should sit right at or just below the waist, not hovering in that awkward mid rib zone that adds ten years and zero flattery.
Once you’ve got the shape sorted, it’s genuinely one of the easiest things to build an outfit around. Thrown over a plain t-shirt and jeans it stops looking like loungewear and starts looking like you made an effort without trying too hard. Over a slip dress it does something properly clever, softening the slink of the satin so you don’t look like you’re heading to an award show at 3pm on a Tuesday. My colleague Priya wears hers with wide leg trousers and trainers and somehow looks more put together than the rest of us in blazers, which I resent slightly but respect completely.
Where it really earns its keep is anything that sits between smart and celebratory. Christmas lunch, a wedding you’re not in the bridal party for, a work drinks that starts at six and you’re not sure how formal to go. It solves the problem of “dressy but not trying to be the main character” better than almost anything else in that price bracket of your wardrobe. Skip the tight pencil skirt pairing though, that’s how you end up looking like reception staff at a hotel that takes itself very seriously.
