I bought a broderie dress in 2019 that looked, under any light stronger than a candle, like a christening gown that had given up on itself. Cheap cotton, holes punched too wide, hem that curled up like it was embarrassed to be there. I wore it once, to a barbecue, and my cousin took one look and said “did you make that from a duvet cover.” I retired it that afternoon. So I get why broderie has a reputation problem. Done badly it’s twee. Done well it’s one of the best things you can put on your body between April and September.
The difference is entirely in the holes, ridiculous as that sounds. A good broderie dress has the pattern cut with intent, proper scalloping, embroidery that’s dense enough to hold its shape rather than gape at the seams, and fabric underneath (or a decent lining) so you’re not accidentally staging a peep show on the school run. Heavier cotton or a linen blend holds up better than the flimsy stuff, and it should feel a bit substantial in your hands, not like tissue paper someone’s punched a hundred holes in with a biro.
Styling wise, resist the urge to go full milkmaid. A broderie dress wants something to cut against its softness, a battered leather jacket, boots with actual tread, a bag that looks like it’s been dropped on a train platform at least once. Add a belt if it’s shapeless, add nothing if it isn’t.
In winter they’re not dead either, thick tights and a chunky cardigan will get you another six weeks out of it before you have to admit defeat.
Occasion wise this is where it actually earns its keep. Lunch that runs into evening drinks. A wedding where you can’t quite tell from the invite how dressed up to go, so you split the difference. Any holiday where you want one dress that does dinner and the beach walk after without you having to pack a second outfit. It photographs well, moves well, and forgives a glass of wine spilled down the front in a way that silk simply will not. That’s the whole appeal, really. It looks like effort and requires almost none.
