A good leather belt has weight to it. Pick one up and it should feel like it has some substance, a firmness that comes from full grain or top grain leather rather than a bonded or coated substitute that will crack at the fold within a year. The edges matter too, a well finished belt has edges that are burnished or painted neatly, not left raw and fraying the first time it catches on a denim loop. Cheap versions announce themselves quickly through a stiff, plasticky hand feel and a shine that looks more like lacquer than a leather patina developing naturally with wear.
Width and hardware are where most of the decision making should happen. A slim belt, somewhere around two to three centimetres, belongs with tailoring and anything with belt loops set close together, trousers, pleated skirts, dresses that want a definition at the waist rather than a statement.
Go wider, three and a half centimetres upwards, and it moves into denim territory, chinos, anything workwear adjacent, where the belt is doing a job as much as a look. The buckle should feel proportionate rather than dominant, a good rule is that it should never be the first thing someone notices before the fit of the trouser or the cut of the coat.
Colour is a genuine decision, not an afterthought.
Black and a mid brown tan will do most of the work across a working week, but a rich chestnut or oxblood earns its place for the way it lifts a plain pair of trousers or a simple shirt dress without needing anything else to say something. Matching belt to shoe is a rule worth breaking occasionally, a contrast can look more considered than a perfect match.
Where they really prove themselves is in the small adjustments they allow, cinching a straight dress into a waist, giving structure to an oversized coat, breaking up a monochrome outfit with a single line of texture. They suit everything from a desk to dinner, from smart casual weekends to occasions that call for tailoring but not formality, and the ones worth the money are the ones that get worn on repeat without ever looking like they are trying too hard.
