I used to think black lace was a nighttime thing only, something you wheeled out for a leaving do and immediately regretted under strip lighting at 11pm. Wrong opinion, held for about six years, and I’m formally taking it back. Worn right, at midday, with the right shoes, black lace is one of the most useful things you can own for a proper weekend brunch, the kind with a table booked for eleven that somehow doesn’t wrap up till four.
What makes a good one isn’t the lace itself, it’s the lining. Too sheer and you’re basically doing a Halloween costume of “sophisticated woman,” too dense and you lose the whole point of wearing lace in the first place. The good ones sit somewhere in between, enough texture to catch the light when you move, enough coverage that you’re not spending the whole meal adjusting a strap and wondering if the waiter noticed.
A friend of mine turned up to a brunch in one that had clearly been bought for a wedding the week before and spent the entire time tugging the neckline like she was trying to escape it. Not the dress’s fault. Wrong dress for the day, right dress for a different Saturday.
For daytime, the whole trick is undoing the eveningness of it.
Flat sandals or clean white trainers instead of anything with a heel that says “cocktails.” A denim jacket thrown over the top does more work than you’d expect, it takes the dress from “special occasion” to “just what I’m wearing,” which is exactly the vibe brunch wants. Gold jewellery kept minimal, one good ring rather than four, and hair left slightly undone rather than styled within an inch of its life.
It suits any daytime occasion that wants a bit more effort than jeans without tipping into black tie territory, a birthday brunch, a catch up that’s really a debrief, a christening after party where nobody told you the dress code. Layer a cardigan over it in fifteen minutes flat when the plan changes to a walk afterwards, because it always does.
