I spent about three years thinking a blue shirt was a blue shirt, buy the cheapest one, done, category ticked. Then I tried layering one under a jumper for a lunch I was late for, caught sight of myself in a shop window on the way, and realised the collar had folded itself into a shape that looked like it had been slept in on a coach. That’s the thing nobody tells you about this piece: it lives or dies on what happens at the neck and cuff when you put something over it, not on how it looks hanging on its own on a rail.
A proper blue shirt for layering needs enough structure to hold its collar out from under a knit without curling, but a soft enough cotton that it doesn’t bulk up under your arms like you’ve smuggled a cushion in there. That balance is rarer than it should be. Too stiff and it pokes out at odd angles.
Too soft and it disappears into nothing the second you add a coat. The shade matters too, a proper mid blue, not navy pretending to be casual and not so pale it reads as a smart office shirt having a day off, sits right against denim, grey, cream, black, basically anything, which is the whole point of the thing.
Styling wise, it’s built for the collar and cuff trick, worn under a crew neck jumper with both peeking out, or knotted at the front under dungarees, or left properly open under a blazer with just the top button done for something that looks pulled together without trying. Sleeves rolled once and pushed up does more work than any accessory.
It also does a strange, brilliant job under a slip dress in fake spring weather, that three week window when it’s technically warm but the wind hasn’t got the memo.
Occasion wise this is your Tuesday to Sunday piece, the school run, a work call, drinks that start as one drink, a weekend where you’re seeing three different sets of people and can’t be bothered to change outfits between them. It’s not trying to be the main event. It’s the thing that makes everything layered over it look like you thought about it, even on the days you very much did not.
