There’s a very specific blue that a slip dress needs to be, and it isn’t navy and it isn’t quite cornflower either, it’s somewhere in between, closer to the sky about an hour before it properly clouds over. Too dark and it reads like eveningwear that’s wandered onto the lawn by accident. Too pale and it washes out next to green grass and gets swallowed by a marquee the second you step into shade. The good ones sit right in that middle ground, deep enough to feel considered, light enough to still look like daytime.
Fabric matters more than people admit. A slip dress lives or dies on how it falls, and a fabric with even a small percentage of the wrong fibre will cling in exactly the places you don’t want clung to on a day that involves standing around holding a glass of something for three hours.
You want weight without stiffness, something that moves when you do but doesn’t show every seam of your underwear the second the sun comes out. Bias cut is worth paying attention to as well, it’s the difference between a dress that skims and one that just hangs.
Styling wise, resist the urge to dress it up too much. A slip dress at a garden party wants a flat sandal, something with a bit of tan leather to it, and a cardigan or a light jacket thrown over the shoulders for when the temperature drops around five o’clock, because it always does.
Gold jewellery reads better against this particular blue than silver, oddly, warm tones lift it rather than fighting it. A structured bag does more work than a delicate little clutch, you need somewhere to put a hat if you’re wearing one and inevitably decide halfway through that you’re not.
Where it earns its place is anything outdoors and slightly dressed up without being formal, a wedding in a field, a christening with a marquee, a summer birthday that starts at lunch and doesn’t really end. It photographs well against greenery, it doesn’t compete with a hat, and it survives sitting on grass in a way a lot of other party dresses simply don’t.
