A good blazer earns its place through structure, not decoration. The shoulder is where it either works or doesn’t: a clean line that follows the natural shoulder point, with enough padding to hold shape without turning into armour. Too soft and the jacket collapses by lunchtime, too built and it wears the person instead of the other way round. Canvassing matters more than most people realise, a half or fully canvassed jacket will roll and move with the body, while a fused one tends to bubble at the lapel after a few wears and never quite recovers.

Fabric weight dictates how the whole thing behaves. A heavier wool or wool blend holds a crease and drapes with authority, ideal through autumn and winter, while a lighter cotton or linen mix softens the silhouette for warmer months and looser, more relaxed styling.

The better ones taper gently at the waist without pulling across the button, and sleeves that stop just past the wrist bone, showing a sliver of shirt cuff, read as considered rather than accidental.

Where the blazer really proves itself is in how easily it moves between registers.

Worn over a plain t-shirt and straight leg jeans, it takes on an off-duty, slightly undone quality that still looks pulled together. Layered over a silk shirt or a fine knit with tailored trousers, it shifts into something office appropriate without trying too hard. Left open over a slip dress, it does something else again, softening formal occasion dressing into something a bit more knowing. Sleeves pushed up, collar left undone, it stops looking like a uniform and starts looking like a choice.

Occasion wise, this is the piece that gets reached for when the dress code is unclear or mixed, client meetings, early dinners that might turn into something later, travel days where structure needs to survive a few hours of sitting down. A single breasted style in navy or charcoal covers most of that ground without asking questions. Double breasted versions carry more formality and suit a slightly dressier remit. What separates a good one from a forgettable one is rarely the print or the button detail, it’s whether the fit holds through the shoulder and waist without a single adjustment, and whether it still looks composed after a full day of actually being worn.
