Believe it or not, a white jumper is quite difficult to master. Done well it looks effortlessly chic but a white jumper that actually is effortless usually isn’t very well made. The ones that age gracefully and look good after years of love instead of losing their shape after one wear are often made with a good-quality yarn. A tightly spun cotton or merino wool that’s not too fluffy will retain its shape longer while a loose knit jumper made with cheap acrylic will start pilling after a couple of months. Check the knit too – a jumper with a stretched-out rib at the cuffs and hem is likely to lose its shape by the time you wash it the second time.
WHITE STYLE TIPS
Fit is also important – nobody wants to look like they’re wearing a tent, and it really shows in white. If your jumper is too tight then every seam will show as well as every layer you’re wearing underneath, so look for something that fits just loosely through the body. It should be suitably structured at the shoulder to stay put without clinging. A crew neck works well in a slightly thicker knit as it’s easy to layer under a coat or blazer, but if you’re wearing it closer to the skin go for something softer with a bit of drape that you can tuck into your trousers or a skirt.
White and grey are neutrals that love each other, so play on that. White looks incredible with dark denim and trousers as well as tailored skirts and even a leather skirt. It also makes other colours you wear look more intentional rather than bright. Gold jewellery complements white beautifully as it warms it up, but silver keeps it sharp. Throw on a camel, navy or black coat on the opposite shade to the rest of your outfit and you’ve got a look that looks intentional rather than lazy. For day time wear I like to style my white jumper with a pair of straight leg jeans and boots – letting the jumper be the statement piece. If you want to dress it up a bit go for a nice thin knit tucked into a midi-skirt and a pair of heeled loafers for an easy polished look.
White jumpers are my go-to when I want to look put together but not like I’ve tried too hard. They’re perfect for busy office days, important lunches, and travel – anywhere you need to look practical, polished and put together. Just remember to treat your white jumper as a staple rather than a statement and choose high-quality pieces that will last season after season.
