White trousers live or die on the fabric behind them. A cotton drill or a wool blend with a bit of structure will hold a crease and keep its shape through a long day, while anything too thin turns sheer under overhead lighting and clings in all the wrong places. The good ones have enough substance to fall cleanly from the hip without needing an underlayer as insurance, and that weight is the first thing worth checking before anything else about the cut.
Fit matters more here than in almost any other trouser because white offers nowhere to hide. A waistband that sits properly, whether that is high and fitted or a looser, dropped rise, needs to actually stay put rather than needing constant adjustment. Look for a fly front with a proper closure rather than an elasticated pull-on waist trying to pass as tailoring, and check the leg falls in a straight or gently tapered line rather than pulling across the front of the thigh when seated.
A trouser that puckers at the seat or gapes at the waistband the moment you sit down was never going to earn its place, however sharp it looked on a hanger.
Styling them well is mostly about contrast and restraint. A crisp white shirt on white trousers can look considered, but it wants a strong shoe or a bag in leather, tan, black, or a bold colour to stop the whole look reading as one flat block.
Knitwear in navy, camel, or charcoal grounds them for daytime, while a fine silk or satin top in black or a jewel tone turns the same trousers into something for evening without changing a thing about the trouser itself. Tailored jackets in contrasting colours give them the most obvious sense of occasion, but a simple oversized blazer left open does nearly as much work.
They suit the moments where you want to look deliberately put together without appearing to have tried too hard: a summer wedding as a guest, a smart lunch, a gallery opening, a work event that sits somewhere between formal and relaxed. They read as more considered than jeans and less rigid than a suit, which is exactly why they earn a place beyond the warmer months, provided the fabric and the fit were right from the start.
