I spent years insisting that black was the only acceptable biker jacket colour and treated anyone in brown leather like they’d wandered off the set of a period drama. I was wrong, properly wrong, and I’d like to address that opinion directly: I’m sorry, brown biker, you were right and I was being precious about nothing.

What changed my mind is how much softer brown is on the eye while still doing all the same work. Black biker jackets can go a bit hard, a bit uniform, especially once you’ve owned three of them and they’ve started blurring into one shape in your head. Brown has warmth built in. It sits somewhere between a proper leather jacket and something you’d wear with actual tenderness, if that doesn’t sound mad about outerwear.

The good ones have a bit of weight to the leather, hardware that doesn’t look like it came free with a magazine, and a collar that stands up on its own without you having to fight it into shape every time you put it on.

Styling wise, this is the jacket that makes friends with almost everything you already own, which sounds like the sort of line I’d normally ban myself from writing, except it’s actually true here. Cream, camel, khaki, deep green, all the colours that look slightly apologetic under black go properly rich under brown. Thrown over a slip dress it stops the whole outfit looking like you’re trying too hard for a Tuesday.

Over jeans and a plain top it does the opposite job, makes the plain top look considered rather than forgotten. Tucked in tight with tailoring, it undercuts anything too formal, and thank god for that, because a fully matching suit makes me look like I’m about to present a quarterly report.

Occasion wise, it earns its keep on the days that need a bit of armour without shouting about it, dinner with people you’re mildly nervous of, a work thing that’s dressed as casual but definitely isn’t, the awkward middle ground between event and errand. It’s not trying to be the main character, it’s the thing that makes the rest of the outfit look like you knew exactly what you were doing, even on the days you very much did not.
