I have a complicated relationship with wrap skirts, mostly because for years I owned one that never tied properly and flashed half my knee every time I sat down on the tube. That’s the thing nobody tells you about a bad one: it’s not the shape that lets you down, it’s the tie. Get the tie wrong, too short, too slippery, no proper button or popper backing it up, and you’ll spend the whole day doing a discreet hand check every time you stand up. A good black wrap skirt should stay exactly where you put it in the morning, through sitting, walking, getting in and out of a taxi, all of it.

What I actually love about the black wrap skirt is that it does something most black skirts don’t, it moves. There’s a proper swing to a good one, some give at the front where the layers cross, so it doesn’t sit there like a pencil skirt pretending to be relaxed.

That movement is what makes it feel dressed rather than dressed up. Pair it with a plain fitted top and boots and it reads as a Tuesday.

Add a silk shirt and heels and the exact same skirt is suddenly doing a dinner. That range, from desk to evening without changing anything except what’s above the waist, is the whole point of black as a colour here, it never argues with what you put next to it.

Length matters more than people admit. Midi is the safest, most forgiving length for the wrap, it skims rather than clings, and it works whether you’re in flats or heels. Go shorter and you need to be a bit braver about the sitting down situation I mentioned. Go longer and you want a slit or a proper swing in the fabric or it stops being a wrap skirt and starts being a long straight one with an opinion.

Where it earns its place is anywhere you need to look like you tried without it being obvious you did, work drinks, a lunch that might turn into a dinner, a wedding guest outfit when you can’t decide between smart and relaxed. It’s the skirt for not deciding.
