I owned a black tweed skirt for three years before I admitted it was doing nothing. Boxy, a bit stiff, sat wrong at the waist, made me look like I was chairing a parish council meeting. I blamed tweed. Turns out I’d just bought the wrong one, and it took a proper miserable Christmas do in it to work that out.
Because a good black tweed skirt is a completely different animal. The texture is the whole point, that slightly nubbly, woven surface that catches light without shouting about it, so from a distance it reads as sharp black tailoring and up close it’s got all this depth and interest going on.
What makes one worth the money is the weight and the cut working together. Too flimsy and it creases if you so much as sit down for a bus ride. Too stiff and it stands away from your body like it’s got opinions of its own. The ones that earn their keep have a bit of give in the waistband, sit properly on the hip, and have a hem that’s been finished with some care rather than just chopped off.
Styling it is where people overthink things.
You don’t need to match tweed to tweed, that’s a jacket and skirt situation reserved for people who enjoy looking like they’re about to present the weather. Put it with something that has a completely different texture, a soft knit, a fine ribbed polo, a plain white shirt with the collar left open. Boots ground it properly, ideally something with a bit of a heel or a chunky sole depending on whether you’re aiming smart or slightly off duty. Tights in black or a deep colour keep it wintry, bare legs push it towards evening if that’s your thing.
Occasion wise, this is your Sunday lunch skirt, your work Christmas party skirt, your meet the in laws for the first time skirt. It does formal without trying, and it does smart casual with one jumper swap. I wore mine to a wake and a hen do in the same fortnight and nobody clocked it was the same skirt, which felt like the whole point being proven back to me. That’s the mark of a properly good one, it moves between rooms that have completely different rules and never once looks like it’s trying too hard to fit in.
