I spent about four years thinking a black midi skirt was what you wore when you’d given up. Safe, a bit prim, the sort of thing that turns up on a hanger looking like it’s already sighing. I was wrong, and I’ll say that plainly because it took an actual wedding, a coat check queue in Bath, and a woman I’d never met before telling me my skirt was “doing all the work” for me to properly get it.
The good ones earn that compliment through fabric and cut, not colour, because obviously it’s black, that bit’s not in question. What separates a brilliant black midi skirt from a forgettable one is the fall. You want it to move when you walk, not stand there like it’s guarding something.
Satin and good crepe do this properly. So does a heavier ponte if the pleating or seaming has been thought about, rather than just gathered at the waist and left to sort itself out. Length matters more than people admit too, that stretch from just below the knee to mid calf is doing something specific for your proportions, and an inch either way changes the whole conversation.
Styling one is less about finding the right top and more about picking your contrast.
A properly slouchy knit tucked in loosely looks better than anything fitted, because the skirt’s already got the shape, it doesn’t need help. Boots underneath for anything with weather in it, a slim loafer or a bit of heel if you’re going somewhere that involves sitting down a lot and being looked at. I’ve worn mine with an old denim jacket to a Tuesday lunch and with a blazer that cost more than the skirt to an actual work dinner, and it behaved in both situations, which is more than I can say for half my rail.
Occasion wise, it’s doing double duty by design. Office to drinks without a costume change. A funeral, if we’re honest, though nobody puts that on the mood board. Anything where you need to look like you tried without anyone being able to prove it. That’s the whole appeal, and it took me far too long to stop underestimating it.
