I have strong feelings about black tailored trousers, mostly because I own six pairs and only two of them earn their keep. Styling them is where the fun starts. A crisp white shirt tucked in and left slightly untucked at the back is the office version, add a blazer and you’re done before you’ve had your coffee. Swap the shirt for a soft knit and loafers and it slides straight into weekend errands or a lunch you can’t be bothered to overdress for. For evenings, a silk cami or a fitted black top with a heel does something almost annoyingly easy, minimal effort, maximum result. They’re brilliant for travel too, the fabric that resists creasing is worth its weight when you’re getting off a train and heading straight into something.

Occasion wise, this is the trouser for the in between moments, the ones that aren’t quite black tie but aren’t jeans either. Interviews, dinners, the work event you didn’t plan an outfit for until the last minute. A good pair sorts all of it without you having to think too hard, and that, more than anything, is why they’re worth the effort of finding properly.
