I spent about four years thinking brown was the colour you settled for when black felt too try hard and tan felt too much like a dad on holiday. I want to apologise to brown directly for that, because it turns out it’s the only colour that goes with literally everything I own without me having to think about it before 8am, which is the only real test that matters.
A good brown belt bag has to earn its place though. The leather needs a bit of grain to it, something with texture, not the flat shiny kind that scuffs the second it meets a bar stool. And the strap has to actually sit where you want it, low on the hip if you’re going for the slouchy thing, higher and tighter if you want it to look like you planned the whole outfit around it, which you did, you just don’t need to admit that to anyone.
Style wise, this is the bag that makes a plain outfit look like it took effort when it took none.
Jeans and a white shirt, belt bag on top, done. It sits brilliantly against denim, against black, against cream, and it’s the one accessory that doesn’t fight with gold or silver jewellery, it just gets on with both.
My colleague Priya saw mine over a pair of wide leg trousers and said “oh that’s doing a lot of work for very little effort,” which I’ve decided to take as the compliment it clearly wasn’t fully intended as.
Practically, it’s the bag for the day you refuse to carry a bag. Walking round a city all day, festivals, a wedding where you need your phone and lipstick and absolutely nothing else, train platforms where you don’t want both hands full. I wore one through an entire wet Saturday at a market and it came out unscathed while my coat did not.
The trick with brown specifically is not overthinking the tone matching. Cognac, chocolate, chestnut, they all sit together far better than the paint chart in your head suggests. Buy the one with the best hardware and the most honest leather, wear it slightly too often, and stop worrying about whether it matches. It always does.
