I spent about four years thinking box bags were a bit try hard. Too structured, too “look at me,” the handbag equivalent of turning up to brunch in a full face of contour. I’ve properly changed my mind, and I think box bags deserve a direct apology for the years I spent ignoring them in favour of anything slouchy.
What actually won me over is the shape itself. A good box bag holds its form whether it’s stuffed with your entire life or just a phone, a lipstick and a house key rattling around at the bottom. There’s no sad, empty flop happening at the side of a chair.
It sits upright, corners crisp, like it’s got somewhere to be. My colleague Priya put hers down on a train table and said “that’s basically furniture,” and honestly, she’s not wrong, and that’s the appeal. It behaves itself. No slumping, no creasing, no getting mistaken for a bag that’s had a long week.
Styling one is less complicated than people think. The structure does most of the work, so it actually calms down an outfit rather than fighting it. Wear it with something soft and a bit undone, a slip skirt, a loose shirt, a coat that’s seen better days, and the bag becomes the one crisp, deliberate note in the whole look. Try that with a slouchy tote and everything just reads a bit tired.
A box bag under the arm, or held by its short top handle, adds a kind of posture to an outfit, in a good way. I’d stay away from pairing it with anything else that’s rigid and boxy, blazer, structured trouser, structured bag, it starts to look like you’re dressed for a school photo.
Occasion wise, this is where a box bag properly earns its keep. Anything with a dress code benefits, a wedding, a work dinner, an actual sit down lunch where you’ll be putting it on the table rather than the floor. It photographs well, which matters more than we like to admit, and it forces you to edit your life down to the essentials, because there’s no cramming a spare jumper in there. That’s a discipline I need. My friend Callum calls mine “the strict one,” and he means it as a compliment. It won’t do everything, but what it does, it does properly.
