For years I avoided brown like it was the defeatists option when it came to blazers. The pathetic consolation prize that sits next to navy and black, that you grab off the rack when the store has failed you. Turns out I was wrong – and I want you to know that I am saying that proudly because brown deserves an apology from me for spending almost a decade in fashion purgatory.
Try on in plenty of lighting to make sure it actually looks nice and not likecolourless chocolate before buying, but over a plain white shirt in the weirdest lighting you can find at your shop. For me, that was a department store fitting room with the grimiest lighting they had. Where everything looks like muddybrown but if you refuse to look like shit in there, it’ll look great everywhere. A brown blazer that looks chic in that lighting will look chic in office lighting, on a streetstyle blog photoshoot on a train platform and under the afternoon sunlight at a wedding marquee when everyone’s face looks weird.
Look for something with structure across the shoulders so it doesn’t slump when you sit down and try and find a colour that looks like actual brown rather than brown that someone accidentally dyed withcoffee.
I wore mine with a plain white shirt and my coworker Priya looked at me and said, “that’s doing more work than your entire outfit did last Tuesday.” Bless her heart but I cried a little inside because I spent an actual fortyfive minutes on Tuesday’s outfit.
But other than that, honestly, it is as easy as it looks. Brown goes with cream, white, black, olive, and yes gold, and GOD YES more denim washes than navy will ever know how to speak about. Throw it over a plain tee and some jeans and you’re lookin cute and casual but still put together, or throw it over a slip dress for an outfit thats trying to tell people you made an effort but didn’t stress so much that you couldn’t enjoy the evening. It also pairs really well with gold jewellery. You can still rock silver with it if you want, nobody is going to stop you.
With regards to when, this, my friends, is your new blazer for anytime you want to look put together but not like you’re ready to enter the courtroom. Grab it for interviews, work dinners, that Sunday where everyone’s wearing jeans and a shirt but you don’t wanna wear a whole suitsuit. Trust me. It’s your pal. I will come to your house wearing that blazers if anyone messes with you about it.
