I’ve owned three blue tiered skirts in the wrong length before I found the right one, and I still think about the first attempt with something close to shame. For evening, swap the tee for something with a bit of structure on top, a fitted blazer or a simple knit, and change trainers for a heeled sandal, the skirt does the rest of the work so your top half doesn’t need to shout. My sister in law tried one with a bomber jacket for a christening and looked better than anyone else there, including the actual christened baby’s mother, which she has not let anyone forget.

These skirts earn their place across the calendar in a way a lot of statement pieces don’t. Long lunches where you’ll be sat down for two hours and don’t want a waistband complaint. Daytime weddings when the actual dress code says nothing helpful. A festival where you need something that survives being sat on grass and still looks intentional afterwards. They’re forgiving on a body that’s had a big lunch, they layer under a coat without bulking, and the tiers hide more than they reveal, which after enough bad purchases is exactly the quiet, unglamorous thing you actually want from a skirt.
